Teacher: Keep going. Five. Four. Amy: Today is our Workout Wednesday. We do Workout Wednesday every Wednesday. Every hour on the 45, the whole school stops and does a common exercise for a minute. (bell rings) Teacher: Okay, we’re doing butterfly stretches today so take a seat. Julie: They’re given a chance to get their energy out so that they can refocus and do better in school to pay attention. The research shows that physical activity throughout the school day can improve focus and attention allowing students to have more academic success. (bell rings) Meredith: It promotes, number one, a sense of community in our school. We’re all in it together doing it at the same time. Even more importantly to me it promotes a work/life balance and we’re teaching that kind of at an early age. Okay, we do your work, you take your breaks and that, you know, exercise is so important and is a contributor to really good positive mental health. Julie: Some weeks we have themed Workout Wednesdays like during our dance unit, we’ll have dance moves as the workouts.During our jump rope unit we’ll have all jumping activities. We try to just work it in with the school and what’s going on with the school. Gabriel: My favorite one to do is the, um, rocket blasters because I really want to be an astronaut when I’m older. Heather: Their energy is up, they’re more focused and then to be able to teach themselves how to come back down after the recess is to help them learn how to control themselves and to focus back again. Julie: We got this idea from Springfield Estates and we’ve taken it and made it our own and we absolutely love the idea and are thankful to them for sharing it with us. Amy: It just has a really positive impact on morale as well as on our healthy lifestyles. (basketball bouncing sounds) .
